Rock the Cheetah's Ass

The following passage is from a book published in 1951 titled The Scottish Himalayan Expedition by W.H. Murray. It is one of my favorites. If you can get through the "old fashioned" language, this is really just another way to talk about the Wired World Media value of "Rock the Cheetah's Ass."Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills…See More

The power of words in creating success

As a counselor and life coach, I have been exposed to various theories of human behavior and numerous therapeutic treatment modalities. Most of what I have learned involves identifying mental health disorders and creating treatment plans to deal with emotional distress, disability, and suffering. In other words, most of psychotherapy is about understanding misery and undoing the disabling conditions of life.In recent years, I came across Positive Psychology. I fell in love with it! Powerful Speaking

Language is powerful. For all practical purposes, until an idea is put into words, it doesn’t exist. In the 1960’s, President Kennedy spoke about putting a man on the moon. This led to massive efforts that resulted in a man walking on the moon. Family vacations or applying to colleges happen only after someone starts talking about them. Language is required to make almost anything happen. There are a variety of ways to talk about your future. The words you use have a huge influence over your…See More

Emotional Detachment

Work is frustrating, traffic is maddening, relationships are impossible, and there’s never enough time. This article suggests a way to stay cool under stress. It’s a challenge. But if you master it, the quality of your life will greatly improve. Most believe that stress is caused by stressful circumstances. When our finances go down, so do our spirits. When others don’t keep agreements, we’re frustrated or angry. It’s basic cause and effect. Right? Maybe not. Cause and effect relationships are…See More

Emotional Bank Accounts

The quality of your life is determined primarily by the quality of your relationships. When you have loving relationships at home, close relationships with friends, and supportive relationships at work, life is pretty good. If your relationships are filled with anger, misunderstanding, and distrust, distress and anxiety are more common. You can improve relationships by using the concept of emotional bank accounts, as explained by author Stephen Covey. Pretend that you have an emotional bank…See More

CLARIFY WHAT YOU WANT TO “ HAVE,” “DO,” AND “ BE”

Most of our choices fall into three categories. We can: • Increase our material wealth (what we have).• Improve our skills and expand  our activities (what we do) .• Develop our being (who we are). Most people devote an entire lifetime to the first two categories. For example, many act as if they are “human havings” instead of human beings. For them, the quality of life hinges on what they have, and they devote most of their waking hours to getting more—more clothes, more cars, more…See More

Sometimes, conventional wisdom is crap.

When it comes to dealing with people, conventional wisdom is crap. An insight that I have gleaned from my experience with interpersonal relationships is that conventional practices can facilitate poor behavior, while an unexpected approach can squelch poor behavior with much less resistance.

In 1956, Dr. William Glasser started the Ventura School for Girls. Ventura served as both an educational institution and a juvenile detention facility.

One rule was that…

Education officially goes interactive!

If you have a child entering grade school within the next 5 years, there’s a good chance they will have the same reaction to the word “textbook” as today’s 18 year olds have to the phrase “CD player”. The paper based (over-priced) textbook and education in general as we know it are forever changing. Apple’s recent announcement of the iBooks 2 app, iBooks Author and iTunes U is the tipping point for this new era.   …See More
